A piece of Åland history
The Bomarsund fortress was once Åland’s most magnificent building.
The construction of the gigantic fort was initiated by the Russian military in 1832 but after just over twenty years was only half-finished. The main fortress was to become a 290-meter long semicircular armed barracks in two stories, intended to house 2,500 men. Around the main fortress, six cannon towers were planned. During the Crimean War, in 1854, the fortress was destroyed.
The BOMARSUND fortress was of great importance to Åland society and even today people talk about the “Bomarsund era”. Read more about the Bomarsund fortress and its history HERE.
BOMARSUND has been inspired by the fortress's hexagonal stones in red granite. BOMARSUND can be advantageously combined with a smooth ring to highlight the design language.
